Can we preserve the past with seeds for the future?

Morgantina Archaeological Site

Aidone, Sicily, IT

Ongoing

James Huemoeller is project architect and geospatial director for the Excavations at Morgantina: Contrada Agnese Project (AEM:CAP), a multi-year research and excavation project in central Sicily.  After five years of excavation, the project is now turning to the conservation of the ancient Greek site, considering how the uncovered remains should be preserved and presented to the public as part of the archaeological park managed by the Sicilian provincial government.

The typical response for such projects is to install large, usually unsightly, expensive roofs over particularly important parts of the site, such as mosaics, and leave the rest to the elements. At Morgantina, such a response has, over the last seventy-five years, resulted in a site overgrown by invasive species, confusing and hazardous for visitors, and a drain on already overstretched resources. In addition, the roof structures require constant maintenance as the site is prone to frequent wildfires and high winds. The current state of affairs is problematic not only for the preservation of the site but also for the survival of the neighbouring community that relies on the site and its tourism.

In collaboration with AEM: CAP, JIM is developing a different solution. Our proposal reconstructs the site as a garden where visitors can enjoy learning more about the site’s history and move amongst plantings of non-invasive species. Working with a local greenhouse, the arrangement of the plantings, in combination with other landscaping materials, will tell the story of the excavations, cool the site, and hopefully stem the invasive species currently expanding across the site. In addition, 4’ high raised planters will hold the soil removed from the excavations to illustrate the quantity of material removed from the site and delineate between the ancient site and modern interventions. Benches, shade structures, and more stable walking surfaces will also enhance the visitor experience.

This project is the first step towards enhancing the utility of the site. Our proposal preserves and presents the ancient remains while serving a variety of other functions, giving more reason for visitors to come to the site and adjacent town.
