How can we build a foundation for an uncertain future?
Talkeetna Cabin
Talkeetna, Alaska, USA
2011
Cabin designed for a private client on a site near the gateway to Denali National Park. A field of steel piles maintains the permafrost ground and supports an initial stick-framed unit, with the ability to accommodate additional units in the future. A “cold” roof and carefully crafted sloped roofs and sills to prevent ice and snow damage guided the general form and tectonics of the unit, an off-site construction. The envelope also plays with the layered construction using an EPDM heat-absorbing membrane on two of the walls and the roof, and translucent panels over an exposed drainage mat and weather barrier on the remaining two sides.
