Can resilient infrastructure be beautiful?
Surrey Park Washroom
3 Units Complete
Surrey, British Columbia, Canada
Ongoing
The City of Surrey shares a problem with many cities in North America: the broader community is not always receptive to new public washroom facilities. Public toilets, though, are critical for urban environments. Proper services must be provided for the city’s amenities. Intended primarily for installation in the many neighbourhood-scaled parks in the city, the Park Washroom prototype creates a playful, durable, safe facility that can adapt to the various park contexts in the City of Surrey. The design employs a distinct form, rich colours, and unique materials to change the public perception of how a park washroom should look and feel. At the same time, the materials and systems are designed to make the park washroom safe, secure, durable, and cost effective. Flexibility and sustainability are two other features of the design that contribute to its resilience.
